1. Data Protection and Privacy


India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act (DPDP), currently under parliamentary consideration, emphasizes user consent, purpose limitation, and local data storage mandates. For AI systems, this means securing explicit consent before data collection, implementing robust anonymization, and ensuring transparent data usage. Violations could invite hefty penalties, making data governance and compliance critical to any AI deployment.

2. Ethical AI Principles


Government-backed bodies like NITI Aayog advocate for principles such as fairness, explainability, accountability, and non-discrimination. AI systems—especially those used in high-stakes domains like hiring, credit scoring, or urban planning—must be designed to avoid bias and provide mechanisms to explain their decisions. India is building oversight mechanisms like the National AI Advisory Council and working groups under ministries and industry bodies. These aim to define compliance frameworks, certification processes, and mechanisms for grievances or audits.
